A clogged kitchen sink is a common household problem. Here's how to tackle it:
Boiling Water: The simplest first step. Pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain. This works well for melting grease buildup. Use caution, as boiling water can damage some pipes, particularly PVC pipes. Test on a small area if you are unsure.
Plunger: A sink plunger is specifically designed for sinks, not toilets. Ensure there's enough water in the sink to cover the cup of the plunger. Vigorously plunge up and down, maintaining a good seal around the drain. This creates pressure to dislodge the clog. See if this can clear the water flowing slowly.
Baking Soda and Vinegar: This natural solution is effective for many clogs. Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by one cup of vinegar. Let it fizz for about 30 minutes, then flush with boiling water. Repeat if necessary. It can act on fat build-up.
Bent Wire Hanger or Drain Snake: Straighten a wire coat hanger, leaving a small hook at the end. Carefully insert it into the drain and try to break up and remove the clog. A drain snake (also called an auger) is a more specialized tool that can reach further into the drainpipe. This method is useful for tackling hair clogs.
Check the Garbage Disposal (If Applicable):
Clean the P-Trap: The P-trap is the curved pipe under the sink. Place a bucket under the P-trap to catch water. Loosen the slip nuts that connect the P-trap to the drain pipes. Remove the P-trap and clean out any debris. Reassemble the P-trap, ensuring the nuts are tight but not overtightened. Make sure that the p-trap is free.
Chemical Drain Cleaners (Use with Caution): These should be a last resort as they can damage pipes and are harmful to the environment. If you use one, follow the instructions carefully and wear protective gloves and eyewear. Never mix different chemical drain cleaners. These can deal with difficult clogs.
Call a Plumber: If none of these methods work, it's time to call a professional plumber. There may be a more serious problem with your plumbing.
